Global democracy februari 23, 2006

R J Rummel has an article in his blog where he writes about a global Gallup survey. It tries to give a picture about world public opinion about democracy. So, where are people most content with democracy? In Europe perhaps? No… not at all. Continental Europe (not Western Europe mind you) actually have the least amount of citizens who agree upon the two following statements: “Democracy may have its problems but is the best system of government”; and “In general, I am satisfied with democracy”.

So, what parts of the world have citizens who, to the highest degree, agree upon these assertions?  North America, Africa and Western Europe. The Middle East also scores high points. However… in this survey the Middle East only consists of Israel and Turkey, and I have no clue why…
